Our clients were ready to downsize their home, but were very reluctant to relocate. They therefore decided to convert their large existing garage into their new home.
2A1M’s involvement consisted of obtaining planning permission for a side extension to the garage, as well as gaining Building Control approval for the construction works. Both were obtained in tandem, ensuring the project's programme was as efficient as possible.
The existing garage construction consisted of stone and block walls, a tiled pitched roof and rendered walls to the rear. The main feature of the garage was its exposed timber trusses, which we were keen to exploit.
One of our client’s main objectives was to highly insulate the building without compromising the available floor area. 2A1M therefore kept wall, floor and roof constructions to a minimum, whilst still ensuring that the thermal performance was not compromised. This has resulted in a better climate controlled and energy efficient home.
The existing structure was retained as far as possible, with the roof and stone walls to the front elevation preserved and insulated from the inside. The existing rendered walls to the rear were rebuilt to allow for large new openings. This also reorientated the existing garage aspect from front to back; connecting the house to its garden, rather than to the driveway.
The end result is a surprisingly generous space, with lovely vaulted ceilings and animated light throughout.
