House For a Cricket Lover

2A1M Studio have recently gained planning permission for the change of use of a first floor gym into a new dwelling, located in the heart Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage City.

House for a cricket lover is a project for Bath Cricket Club, an historic sporting institution located just to the south of the Rec and converts an underused gym into a truly individual apartment. Sited on the southern boundary of the cricket pitch, residents will be able to enjoy amazing views over the grass to the spires of the historic centre. Punctuated throughout the summer by the sound of leather on willow and the warm ripples of applause from spectators.

The interior of the apartment will be as unique as it’s setting, taking advantage of the spans offered by the existing building to create expansive living areas, bisected by the huge steel sections.

There were several technical challenges associated with the project; Creating a new entrance in an existing building, most of which was under a long-term lease to a separate organisation, building a case for a new apartment in such and unusual setting and dealing with a design flood level higher than the first floor of the building! The deep plan, and an aspiration to do as little with exterior as possible, also meant that natural light was at a premium and recycling light across internal spaces was vital.

Against the odds the project sailed through planning, skilfully guided by Chris Dance of LPC (Trull) planning consultancy, and we look forward to commencing the detailed design soon.
