Back in July, 2A1M returned to admire the final phase of the works at our project in North Bristol, which included an existing garage converted into our client’s new home.
We took on the project back in 2021, following planning permission already being granted for the conversion of the existing garage into a dwelling.
We submitted an additional application for a new extension, a garden studio and then later for a new oak porch. We also took the project through technical design and building control, with the clients managing the build themselves onsite.
The existing garage construction consisted of stone and block walls, a tiled pitched roof and rendered walls to the rear. The main feature of the garage was its exposed timber trusses, which we were keen to exploit.
The existing structure was retained as far as possible, with the roof and stone walls to the front elevation preserved and insulated from the inside. The existing rendered walls to the rear were rebuilt to allow for large new openings. This also reorientated the existing garage aspect from front to back; connecting the house to its garden, rather than to the driveway.
The new oak porch references the original trusses of the garage, softening the entrance and original linear elevation.
The garage was also extended to the northeast, providing that much needed extra room for the master bedroom.
The end result is a surprisingly generous space, with lovely vaulted ceilings and animated light throughout. Take a look at our project page, here, for some further insight.
